NASHVILLE.
NASHVILLE, Tenn -- Jars of peanut butter have been banned in Tennessee's 15 state prisons because inmates were hiding fire-arms drugs and other contraband in the 18-ounce containers, state corrections officials said.
The ban came after an investigation revealed that George Hyatte, a prisoner in Knoxville, had concealed a smuggl confined apartment phone in a jar of peanut butter at the prison where he was being held and had used it to coordinate a deadly breakout last August while he was being taken to court.
"After today, similar containers shall be considered contraband and will consequence in disciplinary action," George Little, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction, said Wednesday.
Prison officials plan to go or come back the department's 4,600 jars to the vendor and replace them with one-ounce condiment-styled packets.
