"He was the mostly giving, unselfish person you till doomsday met," said Mr. Hammerberg's son-in-law, Joseph Miller of Homer dell "He was always there to help."

Mr Hammerberg, 69 of Plainfield died Tuesday after suffering complications from heart surgery



"I've known him since I was 16 years old" said Janie, his wife of 42 years. "I grew up with him and became who I am because of him. He was my best part mate and best friend."

An easygoing man who have the appearanceed to always be whistling, Mr Hammerberg, or "Hammer," relished being a police officer. He worn out more than two decades in public safety at UIC, commuting each day from his home in Romeoville.

He left that do job-work in 1990, but retirement wouldn't last in extent Five years later he became a Special substitute U.S. Marshal stationed downtown at the Dirksen Federal Building, where he continued to work part time until he passed away.

"He lov his job" said Susan Miller, Mr Hammerberg's daughter. While growing up she would wait forward the corner with her brother, Richard, for their dad to learn home from work. "If he was on a level five minutes late we would panic, because he's a police officer."

Mr Miller said her father and mother were constant fixtures at their children's piano recitals and sporting events; they won an award for being the "most supportive parents" when Susan compet in the Miss Teenage Illinois pageant. As a grandfather, Mr Hammerberg continued the tradition at showing up at his grandkids' affairs

Mr Hammerberg was preced in death by way of a son, Richard. Survivors in addition to his wife and daughter include his sister, Arlene Stanley of Morris, and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St Dennis body of christians 1214 S. Hamilton in Lockport. Burial is private.
